Nasties Rugby
Nasties Rugby
The nasties have continued on their roller coaster ride into dinosaur rugby history with their trip to Nepean Rugby Park in Penrith to take on the Legless Emus and the rugby loving old boys from Blakehurst.

A great day was organised by the Legless Emus. Thanks very much for hosting us and we look forward to returning the favour in the coming seasons. The nasties would also like to welcome two new players Matt and Mark, welcome.

Onto the match, the first match saw Blakehurst take on the nasties, we are quickly learning that you defend for long periods in dinosaur rugby and today was no different. Blakehurst controlled the ball for phase after phase reminiscent of the Wallabies at their best. The nasties though were admirable opponents and held firm.

With our first touch of the ball our illustrious club secretary, coach and (only) selector tried a pass that in olympic diving terms would have rated a 9.7. The one handed 27 yard pass with a pike was only slightly late on the turn. It was though late enough for the Blakehurst centre to snap the ball out of the air and score their team's first try of the season. There is no truth in the rumour that Hawko is now an honourary member of Blakehurst.

Despite this early setback the nasties went about their business in ernest. Some great work from a loose ball saw our skipper Troy "Try time" Mcgrath snatch the ball with 20 metres to the post. "Try time" sprinted and with a beautiful last second side step of the posts became the innaugral forward try scorer for the club. All other forwards cuddled and fairly skipped back into position.

The nasties were starting to get the upper hand with three quarters of the encounter played, a beautiful shimmy saw Jamie King step into the clear with 65 metres to go. With memories of Tim Bentley in Avoca flashing through his mind, he pinned his ears back and sprinted into the opposition 22. At this moment King got lucky, despite the best efforts of the sniper that brought down Bentley last week King stopped and started in the 22 before sprinting home for the game clinching score. Amazingly 2 forwards had scored and secured the nasties first ever victory.

The second game started and the home team had come to play, the match ebbed and flowed and was locked at 1 try apiece (a great solo effort from Dean G) before Penrith scored a second and game winning try. This match saw great great unsung hero work from a few players, Adam law tackled himself to a standstill. Stavros who took up ball after ball to the defensive line of the Emu's and Justin and Mike in the forwards did some great work. Deak playing at half back had to leave the field with a leg injury not before he had broken the world record for left foot steps at the base of a ruck.

The moment of the day though was not in our "official" matches.

"Try time" Mcgrath fronted up for Blakehurst in the third stanza, in what can only be described as a life changing moment "Try time" ran down the Penrith winger in a 40 yard duel, easily the biggest cheer of the day came.

For the record Jamie King got the three points for player of the day for evading the sniper. Well done Jamie. Photos to follow.

Onwards and upwards with the Newport Nasties.
