Nasties Rugby
Nasties Rugby
The Newport Nasties juggernaut rolled on to Game 7 of the season at Avalon Bulldogs Stadium today in basking 25 degree sunshine. A spirited and determined Dee Why Lions side tested their fellow northern beaches team in a highly entertaining encounter of rugby that saw a 5-4 scoreline favour the ‘glamour’ home team. In a hard fought and closely contested match that was brilliantly controlled by referee Bruce Killingsworth, no side was going to give anything away.

The Blue, White & Pinks looked unsure of themselves in the first stanza as the visitors took a surprised 2-0 lead. Playing with five Nasties in their side, the Dee Why team had an air of confidence about them before the Nasties came back to level the score in the second stanza. It was through some brilliant lead-up work by the Newport forwards, in particularly Thomas The Tank (Darren Vaux), Tony Smythe and the Crazed Giraffe that gave Darren Flynn the room for a superb pass to perennial tryscorer Phil Scarr that had the home side on the scoreboard. Another try by the unknown try-scorer brought the teams level in a closely contested match. Mick Watts playing for Dee Why was everywhere and had a hand in the Lions next try as the visitors took a 3-2 advantage at the final break. Unfortunately, an attempt to stop the try by a very committed Hugh Wood resulted in a dislocated elbow and a trip to the Hospital for the Nasties stalwart.

The final and probably most entertaining stanza of the day saw the home side return to the sheds as victors. A few crunching tackles by the Lions saw Ray Howell hit hard and came off the park bruised and sore. A personal battle raged on the field between Skip (Dee Why) and Tim Bentley that had the crowd on their feet. Mita also playing for the Lions chimed in well despite the abuse thrown at him from the sideline. Aido scored his debut try to raucous applause from the capacity crowd with his wife Nikki toasting it with a quick drink of champagne “…..that’s my hubby…..what a legend!” the normally reserved Nikki shouted. Johnny Fienig had another solid game with the Hoff everywhere when it mattered. Coach Trollope and Paul Hawke proved a thorn in the Nasties side with both their running and tackling stifling many Nasties runs to the tryline.

A welcome return by Deaks saw the ball clear out well and help create many opportunities alongside Flynnie. Also Matty Read returning after a rib injury who had some superb running of the ball through the middle of the pack and Colin Scott who managed to weave around the opposition following a calf strain. They can only improve the Nasties performance.

A large crowd gathered at the clubhouse afterwards with agreement that it was a fantastic and entertaining game to watch. The ‘Pink Nellie” was up for grabs with Jane Mann awarded it on the back of a super performance in the forwards by her husband Darren. The FRONTLINE Man-Of-The-Match going to Thomas The Tank for his non-stop efforts on the field today and he will certainly challenge others for this years “Best Pig” Award. The ‘Golden Boy-Lo’ being awarded to a very surprised Michael King to the applause of the packed crowd.

Only a weeks break for the Nasties before they travel to Terrey Hills for games against Oakhill, Dee Why and Terrey Hills next Sunday. Thanks to the players who played for Dee Why today (Skip McGrath, Coach Trollope, Mita Hamilton, Paul Hawke and Mick Watts) to make the game a real contest. We look forward to their return to the Nasties team next week. We also wish Hugh Wood a speedy recovery from his injury.
