Nasties Rugby
Nasties Rugby
After a fortnight of rest and focus on the game ahead, it was leadened skies that greeted the mighty Newport Nasties Rugby side for their second match of the season but it did not prevent them from shining in the wet against a powerful Eastwood Charcoal side at Avalon Bulldogs Stadium today. Despite the weather a capacity crowd deliriously cheered on their local heroes to a convincing win on the hallowed turf that was recently named as one of the top 10 rugby grounds in the world by a panel from the IRB. “…..we are very proud of this fact however it is still a league ground and nursery of local talent…..” Bulldogs President and now Nasties icon, Dim-Sim Farrell said in an interview in ‘Rugby News’ magazine this month.

In what was a hard, tough and fair game of rugby, the powerful Nasties side begun in similar fashion to their recent clash with Penrith and scored early through some brilliant backline work by Scotty Dalton and Darren Flynn to once again send the ‘phantom’ first try scorer over in the corner. Not to be outdone, Phil Scarr chimed in for another 4 pointer and set-up a solid day for the blue, whites & pinks. “…..this is all too easy, but I’m enjoying it…..” Scarr said after his third try for the match and tenth of the season so far. Adam Peate was all smiles after scoring a double on debut for the local side and quipped “…..it is a privilege to be a part of this esteemed backline, where are those pigs!!!”

Once again ‘The Axe’ was everywhere while Trooper smashed Tim Bentley time and time again whether he played for Eastwood or the Nasties. Paul Stanton never stopped all day and has become one of the most feared competitors in the side. “I’m just glad he plays for us because as fullback I’m not going to stand in his way…..” Ray Howells said after the match. In one of his best displays seen on a rugby field, Stavros excelled for Eastwood and lead their forwards charge. “Yeh, it was fun out there but I’ll be glad to be back in the Nasties gear next game…..” Stavros commented to the ABC camera’s.

Despite the solid display of rugby, it was a depleted side that took the field for the Nasties with many injuries after over vigorous play at Thursday Night’s training. “Trollope really put us through our paces, but we loved it…..” Mita said from the sideline. The Nasties side however did miss the influence of ‘The Hoff’ who did not play after being selected for the Wallabies train-on squad to play the Barbarians next Saturday Night. “…...they really do miss me out there, don’t they…..” The Hoff was heard saying on the sideline to Fox Sport News.

Once again Rugby was the winner on the day with the match upholding the Golden Oldies motto of Fun, Friendship and Fraternity. After their solid display the Newport Nasties now look forward to the challenge of the Eastwood Gala Day in 2 weeks and a possible rematch with the Charcoals. “We can only improve from here” Skip McGrath screamed during the post-match celebrations. Of the awards the Golden BOYO this week was won by hooking sensation Pup Walsh to loud applause by the boisterous capacity crowd.

Onwards & Upwards.
