Nasties Rugby The sun rose to a pristine mild autumn morning as preparations begun for the Newport Nasties much anticipated first rugby game of the 2009 season. Dew glistened on the carefully prepared turf of the Avalon Bulldogs Stadium where 80,000 spectators were expected to cheer on the blue and whites. At 11am the nervous wait for the shrill of the referee’s whistle silenced the crowd as they watched in awe of their local team of rugby champions and Stavros. “…..as I have been quoted before, I am second-to-none when it comes to my rugby prowess…..” Stavros was heard to say before dropping the ball for the third time in a row and being replaced after 2 minutes of play.
Experts to a man The Penrith Legless Emus had trekked for three days from the foot of the mountains to arrive at the hallowed arena and were here to play the game in a tough but fair manner. The winner on the day would prove to be rugby. The elite Nasties team were ready for the challenge at hand and scored early. Unfortunately the unknown author who was required to report on the game was at the bar for another drink of ‘lemonade’ and cannot identify the try scorer. Meanwhile, the Emu’s had learnt their lesson early and tightened up in defence. Then with the two teams evenly poised a beautiful pass from the mercurial Darren Flynn saw the stadium erupt to a thunderous roar as the Bulldogs President and Legend of the Game, Glenn ‘Dim Sim’ Farrell scored a magnificent try to set up a great day for the Nasties. The Emu’s were not to be outdone and hit back with successive tries to Nasties recruits Phil Scarr and Frank Elsworth. Elsworth’s normally tentative stance in catching the ball at training was a thing of the past as he sped past the opposition on both sides to have a marvellous debut. “…..I’ve won the Golden BOYO at training, I want to be the first to win it in a game” Elsworth commented to the ABC camera’s at halftime. The see-sawing battle soon saw the Nasties break away to a handy lead. A bit of niggling from the speedy 65kg winger Colin Scott to Darren ‘Thomas Tank Engine’ Vaux while on opposing sides saw the waif-like back come off second best in his attempt to prize the padded shoulder gear away from the 190cm, 130kg forward. “…..don’t worry, I’ll have those shoulder pads by the end of the day…..” Scott commented while being goaded by ‘Thomas’ at the post-match celebrations. Former Wallaby Dean Guberina spoke to ESPN News of his delight to join old teammate and fellow 1999 World Cup victor Phil Pete Johnson - Sponsored by Bunnings Warehouse Scarr in the Nasties lineup. “…..Scarry and I go back a long way but have not played together in the same team since that win ten years ago…..” Guberina commented. Stepping into the fray was Sean ‘Wendell’ Panambalana replacing Scotty Dalton in the half-back spot midway through the game. “…..I reckon I have Dalton scared for that (half-back) spot. He’ll be peeling the oranges soon…...” Wendell smirked in Dalton’s direction after the match. “…..he can have it, I’ll play prop” was Daltons retort to roaring laughter from the capacity crowd. The King Brothers once again both performed magnificently and were unlucky not to have taken out some of the games awards on offer. “…..when you constantly play as well as I do you tend to be missed…..” the younger King said on Fox Sport immediately after the game. The injured Ray Howell who won the inaugural Newport Nasties Golf Open two weeks ago played well within himself while Mita lamented “…..gees I’m good, I was wasted playing Soccer for all those years…..”. An historic moment in the match came when Mark Hodgson was yellow-carded by the referee for repeat infringements in the ruck. “…..I had never achieved very much in Rugby, now I have…..” Hodgson said on his third bottle of red that afternoon. Self-appointed captain of both sides, Troy ‘Skip’ McGrath led the teams well after the off-season. “…..it’s great to be back on the field and maximizing the use of the flick pass…..” McGrath quipped in an exclusive interview for Woman’s Day magazine soon after the match. A memorable moment of the match was a Pup Walsh line-out throw to Flynnie who was immediately smashed by Skip and the Emu forwards. “…..not one of my best…..” Walsh was heard to mutter on the field. The crowd enjoyed seeing former Welsh international, Jeremy Beynon back in action after an enforced layoff. “…..the Doctors said it was a heartlage, whatever that is. I’m back now and looking very much to the rest of the season.” BOYO said while sipping another red with the Crazed Giraffe. “……it was totally unreal out there. I haven’t had this much fun since tackling the Brahma’s in the wet season up North…..” Sergeant commented. Adrian ‘Trooper’ Harding is one who is glad to see the Welshman back in the team. “…..I do admire Jeremy for his rugby skills and all that he has taught me about the game…..” a teary Trooper admitted. Some of what he had learnt didn’t work as Trooper went in to tackle Skip playing for the emus and went flying backwards like he had been fired out of a cannon backward with no safety net!!! “…..No comments” was Trooper’s reply. Justin Burgess, aka “The Hoff” was all smiles after the game. Gordon Bray described it as The Hoff’s best game for the Nasties with some great hit ups and must surely be in consideration for Robbie Deans 30 man Wallaby squad for the season. Nasties coach, Mark Trollope must have been pleased the effort both he and team put in. “…..yeah, it was a good way to start the season but training needs to be stepped-up to really compete…..” Trollope apparently commented but would not confirm this to team mates. Paul Staunton was one to avoid when opposing the rugged forward. Paul Hawke commenting “…..whichever side Staunton was on, I admit – I followed…..”. Matty Read fired-up beautifully “…..it was a great match, now for a drink”. Tim ‘Tinkerbelle’ Bentley smashed them in the forwards and proved once and for all that despite his attire he can play good rugby. Mick ‘QF1’ Watts was like a cattle-dog chasing sheep around a paddock while Joan Eales was heard to comment that Adam ‘The Axe’ Law was playing like lumberjacks in the Amazon Forest - cutting down everything in sight. Pete Johnson had a dream Nasties debut with a try and setting-up many others. A former Wallaby coach described it as a man-of-the-match performance with undoubted more accolades to follow during the season. Meanwhile, Uncle Pete’s Toys were a big hit for the kids with a jumping castle that some of the Nasties could have provided enough hot air to keep it up for days in their post-match talks. A little known ‘Guinness Book Of Records’ was broken at the ground for most number of kids on a jumping castle. The Nasties can’t wait to see what toys he pulls out next. All-in-all Rugby was the winner on the day with a great contest on the field. The major awards were presented to Nasties debutants. Phil Scarr winning the Golden BOYO and enjoyed his warm Vodka and Lemon drink while major sponsor ‘Frontline’ Man-Of-The-Match went to Dim-Sim amongst rapturous applause by the parochial crowd. Both were humbled by their awards and thanks go to the Penrith Legless Emus for an inspired game of rugby. We all now look forward to the next game in two weeks against Eastwood Charcoals at Avalon Bulldogs Stadium. Onwards & Upwards. |
